GBPUSD presses into 1.3280: breakout could put 1.3390 back in play

GBPUSD is attempting to turn higher after the September selloff brought the pair back to a long-term rising trendline on the daily chart. Buyers have so far defended that support, while momentum is beginning to recover from bearish extremes. On the 4-hour chart, Sterling is now challenging the 1.3280 resistance area, making this level the key trigger for a broader rebound toward 1.3390.

GBPUSD daily chart analysis

On the daily chart, GBPUSD has found support around the 1.3180–1.3200 region, where price meets the rising trendline that has connected the major lows since November 2025.

The reaction from this area is technically important. Despite the aggressive decline from the August high, sellers have been unable to force a sustained break beneath the trendline. Instead, price spent several sessions building a base above support before the latest bullish candles pushed the pair back toward 1.3280.

The Fractals indicator adds weight to this support structure. Several lower fractals have formed around the recent lows and along the rising trendline, highlighting repeated rejection of lower prices. The latest recovery candle is also noticeably stronger than the preceding consolidation candles, suggesting that buyers are beginning to regain initiative.

Momentum is improving as well. The MACD remains below the zero line, so the broader momentum picture has not yet turned fully bullish. However, the negative histogram has begun to contract after reaching a deeper trough, while the signal line is curling higher. This shows that bearish momentum is losing strength and supports the possibility of a recovery if price can clear nearby resistance.

The first major test is 1.3280. This level has repeatedly acted as an important pivot and now stands directly above the current recovery. A decisive daily close above it would strengthen the bullish reversal structure and expose 1.3390 as the next significant upside objective.

Key Levels:

  • 1.3180–1.3200: Rising trendline support and the area currently protecting the daily recovery.
  • 1.3280: Immediate resistance and the key bullish breakout level.
  • 1.3390: Main upside target following a confirmed break above 1.3280.

GBPUSD 4-hour chart analysis

The 4-hour chart shows the recovery attempt in greater detail.

After falling sharply through September, GBPUSD entered a broad consolidation around the 1.3200–1.3280 area. Repeated attempts to extend below the lower end of the range have failed, and price has now returned to the upper boundary near 1.3280.

The latest sequence of candles is constructive. Buyers have produced a steady recovery from the lower part of the range, culminating in a strong bullish candle that is now pressing directly into resistance. This is the strongest test of the upper boundary in several sessions and puts the market close to a potential short-term structure shift.

The Ichimoku indicator also shows a notable improvement. Price has recovered above the Tenkan-sen and Kijun-sen, signalling stronger short-term momentum, and is now challenging the upper part of the Kumo around the same 1.3280 resistance zone.

At the same time, the forward cloud has narrowed significantly compared with the much broader bearish Kumo seen during the September decline. This contraction suggests that the bearish trend is losing strength, although a clean break above the cloud is still required for stronger confirmation.

That makes 1.3280 especially important. A sustained H4 close above this level would clear both horizontal resistance and the remaining Ichimoku barrier, significantly improving the technical outlook.

From there, the chart offers room for a recovery toward 1.3390, which represents the next major resistance area on both the 4-hour and daily timeframes.

GBPUSD bullish breakout scenario

The daily and 4-hour charts are beginning to align around a recovery setup.

On the daily timeframe, GBPUSD is holding a long-term rising trendline, the Fractals indicator confirms repeated support around the recent lows, and MACD shows that bearish momentum is beginning to fade. On the 4-hour chart, price has reclaimed the Tenkan-sen and Kijun-sen and is now testing the top of the Ichimoku structure around 1.3280.

A decisive break and sustained hold above 1.3280 would provide the confirmation buyers are looking for and could trigger a broader recovery toward 1.3390.

For now, the setup comes down to one level: the trendline has held, momentum is improving, and GBPUSD is knocking on resistance. The next move around 1.3280 should determine whether the rebound develops into a larger bullish recovery.

Bullish path: 1.3280 breakout → 1.3390.
